Use on...

Before you start

You can’t use this stain on decking, garden furniture or other smooth planed wood. We have other products to help you with that.

Cold wet weather stops the stain from drying and could wash it off. So make sure it’s a warm day with the temperature above 10°C and no rain is forecast.

The wood needs to be clean and dry so the stain can soak in properly. To clean the wood, use a stiff brush to get rid of any dirt.

If you want to cover up a bright, strong or contrasting colour, you’ll need to use extra coats. This stain is safe to use around plants and pets.

Application

You can either brush or spray your stain.

Brushing

  1. Get lots of stain on your brush and apply a thick coat to your wood but don’t spread it too far.
  2. After one hour, it will be 100% showerproof. It takes 4 hours to dry fully.
  3. If your wood is weathered, you may need to apply a second coat. After the first coat has dried, review it to see if you need a second one.

Spraying

  1. Pour the liquid into the tank.
  2. Pump it up or turn it on and start spraying. Use long, sweeping, horizontal arm movements for an even finish.
  3. Move along the full width of the fence panel, drop down and repeat the process. Overlap each pass by 50% for even coverage.
Aftercare

Maintenance

Regularly inspect your wood for signs of damage. If you notice any, just apply another coat of the stain to protect the wood.

Cleaning

Remove as much stain off your brush as possible and then clean them in warm soapy water.

You should never pour the leftover stain down drains or watercourses. Instead, contact your local council for ways to safely dispose of it.

Why do I need to protect my fence or shed?

Fences and sheds are made of wood. If you don't protect wood it'll turn grey in the sun or rot in the rain. At best it won't look good. At worse, it'll collapse. You can choose two different kinds of Fence Life to protect it. One Coat gets the job done fast. 5 Year Weather Defence needs two coats but will last year after year, after year. Revise with correct products.

How does the Precision Finish Power Sprayer work?

Our new Power Sprayer paints a fence panel in just 2 minutes. What's different is the power settings. You can control how it sprays. It has an accuracy setting so you can do the fiddly parts of your fence, with a small spray pattern. A control setting, that has a wider spray pattern, ideal for filling in gaps. Setting 3 is made for speed. Covering large areas, quick.

How do I clean the Fence Sprayer?

To empty the sprayer, push the pump handle all the way down and lift the pressure release valve until no ‘hissing’ can be heard. Once the pressure has escaped, unscrew the pump unit and tip any liquid back into its tub. (Alternatively, spray the excess liquid back into its tub before releasing pressure). Remove as much product as possible before cleaning, some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings. Don’t empty into drains or watercourses. It’s important that the sprayer is cleaned thoroughly after use. Don’t leave the sprayer filled with product when not in use or overnight. Rinse out the sprayer several times with clean water, then refill with clean water. Re-pressurise and then spray through the nozzle until the water runs clear, it’s best to do this on the Speed setting. Unscrew the wand handle from the trigger and clean the filter with clean water. Remove the nozzle and white filter and clean with warm, soapy water and an old toothbrush. Make sure you don’t use a sharp object as this will damage the nozzle and ruin the spray pattern. Put the nozzle back together and take care to do this in the correct order.

When should I treat my fence?

The best time to treat your fences is in spring. At this time the temperature is more favourable and vegetation which would normally get in the way will not have grown too much. Treating at this time means the hard work is done in time to enjoy the summer.

How to remove Ronseal wood stain

Old or flaking decking wood stain should be removed with a pressure washer and stiff wire brush. Our fence paint can be easily painted over, so if you want to change the colour or freshen up the paint, just paint over it. You might need several coats if your covering a dark colour with a light one and vice versa. For paint that’s flaking or peeling, you can sand the damaged area and cover the old paint with a new one. If you don’t have any sandpaper, you can use a stiff wire brush which will also remove dirt too. If your fence paint has splashed onto concrete or patio, a pressure washer or a stiff wire brush with some hot soapy water should get rid of the fence paint.
